The Truth to Getting Great Abs
Summer is fast approaching and many clients are looking for ways to quickly tone and sculpt their beach bods – specifically the abs. Unfortunately, there’s no short cut or miracle supplement that will result in a six-pack. You can, however, follow a few simple guidelines to get you closer to the results you’re looking for.
You are What Your Eat
It’s no surprise that eating right can get you closer to a six-pack, yet so many of us are reluctant to change our diet. Adjusting protein, carbohydrate and fat levels can vastly impact our efforts to get defined abs.
Protein: Eat More of It
During your quest for the perfect beach bod, expect to increase your protein intake. Protein will help you build lean muscle as well as burn fat.
Here are few great sources of lean protein:
• Lean Beef
• Skinless Chicken
• Cottage Cheese
• Whey Protein
Don’t be Scared of Carbs!
Over the years many crash diets have taught us that carbohydrates are the enemy, however, this is simply not true. Whole grain, natural carbs (such as brown rice and sweet potatoes) should be consumed post-workout. Carb that are eaten after exercise are actually least likely to turn to body fat.
Sources of carbohydrates include:
• Brown Rice
• Sweet Potatoes
Consume Healthy Fats
Not all fats are created equal. While saturated and trans fat can contribute to obesity and heart disease, unsaturated fats from nuts and fish oils are good for you. Healthy fat helps to regulate insulin levels in the body. This will result in less belly fat that’s covering your developing abs.
Examples of foods with health fats include:
• Avocados (bet you didn’t see that one coming!)
• Dark Chocolate (in moderation)
• Chia Seeds
• Olive Oil
There’s More to Great Abs Than Crunches
Although crunches will no doubt contribute to your efforts of gaining great abs, you should be incorporating multi-joint, compound exercises in your routine. While you are doing other exercises that work larger muscle groups, notice how often the abdominals are engaged as well. Other activities that will greatly increase your abdominal efforts include:
• Barbell Squats
• Bench Press
When preforming targeted abdominal exercises such as crunches, planks or bicycle kicks, try to mix them in with your interval or cardio training. Target ab workouts include:
• Sit ups
• Cross Crunches
• Opposite Arm and Leg Raises
• Spiderman Plank Crunch
Now You Know!
Now that you know the truth about getting great abs, go forth and conquer! Anyone can get a six pack through proper training and change in diet. Get the beach body you deserve.
